KELLOGG — A new setting can sometimes be a breath of fresh air.
For the Quilting Nook, the sewing materials shop in Kellogg, it was a matter of condensing and finding a space more suitable — but they found one and they are there to stay.
Owner Terry Morrison celebrated the opening of her new shop last week that culminated with a fun ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday with the Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Previously located in the old Bitterroot Mercantile building, the Quilting Nook just didn’t need that large of a space.
“This is a much better building for me, it’s just so cute,” Morrison said. “The other building was just too big for what we needed.”
Morrison, is almost universally crafty, but her specialty is in sewing.
“I have four daughters and was a single parent, and in order to afford to dress four girls, I sewed all their clothes on a treadle sewing machine,” she said.
Unlike most contemporary quilters who have moved to machine quilting, Morrison still quilts by hand, but is also learning the machine side as well.
Inside her shop there are an assortment of fabrics and other sewing items for visitors to buy, but Morrison’s wealth of knowledge may be the biggest gem of all as customers pick her brain for tips and ideas.
The Quilting Nook will eventually be offering classes, just not in their current location — as it is the perfect size for a shop of its nature, but not for hosting multiple full-size quilts. Morrison has a contingency in place for classes.
“The Chamber of Commerce is going to have an area at their office that they will let people use for classes,” Morrison said. “And I may be doing some stuff over there, as well as other craft classes.”
The Quilting Nook is located at 315 McKinley Ave. in Kellogg, and is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
